Special Education Community Advisory Committee (SECAC)

Our mission is to strive to promote excellence in special education through collaboration and outreach with united voices of family, staff and community. The idea to form a non-profit organizaton which eventually grew into Exceptional Georgetown Alliance was originally formed within SECAC.

GISD Community Forum

The GISD Community Forum is a family-school partnership program with meetings designed to offer education and support to Georgetown area parents and teachers who desire increased knowledge and information to help our children achieve success. Topics will cover a wide range of issues and will vary each month. All interested teachers, parents, and community members are encouraged to attend.

Preparing Classroom Materials

Here APO members from Southwestern University help prepare materials for a classroom of children with significant needs. More work sessions are in the planning stages. If your group is interested in coloring, cutting and assembling classoroom materials should contact Jennifer VanBuren at exceptionalgeorgetown@gmail.com Materials are provided by GISD and a representative of EGA will help you with the project.

Summer Programs

Through a grant from the city of Georgetown and generous donations from individuals and groups, EGA will help to fund a summer program designed for children with significant cognitive and developmental needs. We are working with GISD staff and the Georgetown Recreational Council in order to develop these programs. More information will be available soon.

Because disabilities do not take summer vacation

*Transition Services

Join GISD Transition Coordinator, Susan Upshaw, as she shares tools and insights to our district's Transition goals for students receiving Special Education Services. The coordinated set of activities that take you from PPCD to Life.

 

Region XIII Service Center

Region XIII is the Service Center for Central Texas, including Williamson County and GISD. There are many staff trainings at Region XIII, but there is also training for parents. Region XIII is also a good resource if you have questions or concerns about your district and have already gone through the "chain of command" (teacher, Principal, Director, Superintendent) without resolution.

Texas Project First Parent Information

Instead of wading through the old bureaucratic organization that was TEA, you now have a smaller and more specialized starting place for your questions. Includes: Assistive Technology, Behavior and Discipline Management, Transition, Visually and Hearing Impaired, plus many other subjects parents concerning our students with disabilities.

The Legal Framework for the Child-Centered Process is a template in an electronic format that summarizes state and federal requirements for special education by topic.

 

*Texas Parent to Parent

Texas Parent to Parent is a nonprofit organization created by parents for families of children with disabilities, chronic illness and other special needs throughout the state of Texas. The majority of our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers are parents of children with disabilities or chronic illness and have many years experience providing parent to parent support.

 

Governor's Committee on People with Disabilities.

Here you will find resources and information on disabilities including committee members and law, publications, ADA, key laws, goals and recommendations, disability history, parking, and statistics. You can also learn about local committees around the state. The Disabilities Committee presents numerous awards each year for outstanding achievements made by and for Texans with disabilities.
